Data Products

This page shows how to label Entities as Data Products and restrict user access to Data Products in Enterprise Glossary.

About Data Products

In Enterprise Glossary, Data Products are Entities that are relevant for a specific business purpose or user group. Labeling an Entity or Custom Entity as a Data Product makes it available in the Data Products menu. You can restrict access to these selected Entities and help users focus on the information that is relevant to their work.

Build Effective Data Products

An effective Data Product is a reusable collection of data with the business and technical context that users need to discover, understand, and use it. It can represent a business entity, process, or use case.

To turn an Entity into a useful Data Product, add information that explains its purpose, content, origin, and intended use. Depending on the Data Product, this information can include:

  • Business metadata, such as descriptions, definitions, and documentation.
Description, Business Description and Quick Info Fields.
  • Technical metadata, such as structures, columns, and data types.
    Buildup and Detailed Buildup Fields.
  • Source information that identifies where the data originates.
Data Origin and Used Elements Fields.
  • Data lineage that shows how the data changes and moves.
Object Lineage and Used Elements Fields.
  • Usage and distribution information that shows where and how users consume the data.
    Where-Used Fields.
  • Access and governance information that shows who has access and is responsible for the data.

Not every Data Product needs all of this information. Add the information that supports your use case and underlying systems. Well-documented Data Products are easier to discover, understand, and reuse.

Tip

To add custom information to your Entities, you can create Custom Fields.

Label Entities as Data Products

To label an Entity as a Data Product:

  1. Open the Entity you want to label.
  2. Click Edit in the upper left corner of the Entity. The Entity settings open.
  3. In the Properties section, enable Data Product.
  4. Click Publish to update the Entity.

Enterprise Glossary lists the Entity in the Data Products menu.

Note

Only authors can label Entities as Data Products.

Restrict Users to Data Products

To restrict a user to Data Products:

  • Assign the Data Product Visitor role to the user, see Manage Roles.
  • Label each Entity that the user needs as a Data Product.

Users with the Data Product Visitor role can only access the Data Products menu and look up Data Products in the search bar. They can view related and dependent objects of a Data Product. Example: if a Data Product contains related Entities in Object Lineage, users can access the Entities even when they are not Data Products.
