Connect Xtract Universal to Power BI Service
The following article shows how to connect Xtract Universal to Power BI Service via an on-premises data gateway. For more information on data gateways, see Microsoft Documentation: What is an on-premises data gateway?.
Prerequisites
Connecting Power BI Service with Xtract Universal requires the following components:
Setup the On-Premises Data Gateway
To set up the on-premises data gateway using the Power BI Custom Connector:
- Install the on-premises data gateway on the server that runs Xtract Universal.
- Configure the data gateway, see Use the on-premises data gateway app.
- Switch to the Connectors tab and define the path to the Xtract Universal Custom Connector provided in the installation directory, e.g.,
C:\Program Files\XtractUniversal\powerbi\XtractUniversalExtension.pqx. The gateway now displays XtractUniversalExtension as a Custom Data Connector.

- Click [Close] and restart Power BI.
The configured on-premises data gateway is integrated into the Power BI service environment.
Add Xtract Universal as a Data Source
To add the Xtract Universal Server as a data source in Power BI Service:
- Navigate to Settings > Manage connections and gateways > On-premises data gateways.
- Open the settings of your on-premises gateway and activate the option Allow user's custom data connectors to refresh through this gateway cluster, see Microsoft Documentation: Enable the use of custom connectors.
- Navigate to Settings > Manage connections and gateways > Connections and click [New]. The "New Connection" window opens.

-
Select the connection type On-premises (default setting). Fill in the necessary fields:
- Select the previously created "Data Gateway" from the Gateway cluster name drop-down menu.
- Assign a name to the connection under Connection name.
- Select Xtract Universal Extraction under Connection type. If the Xtract Universal entry is not available in the drop-down menu, check the configuration in Setup On-Premises Data Gateway.
- Enter the server address of the machine that runs Xtract Universal under Server.
- Decide on the appropriate authentication method under Authentication Method, see Single Sign On and SAP Authentication.
Example:

-
Click [Save]. Power BI creates the connection and performs an automatic connection test.
You can now use the gateway in your data sources, e.g., when setting up a Report with Xtract Universal's M-script. For more information on gateways, refer to the Microsoft Documentation: Add or remove a gateway data source.
Data Source Status
To check the status and other gateway settings of a data source:
- Open your workspace and navigate to the settings of an existing dataset [...].

- Expand the entry Gateway and cloud connections.
- Configure the connection of the uploaded Power BI dataset.
- Select the defined gateway and select the name of the connection (here XtractUniversal) from the drop-down menu Maps to:.

The status of the connection is displayed in the Status field.
